Hello Friends,
There seems to be a theme unfolding in our lives this fall, and it has me feeling particularly grateful. Our kids are finding their way back home. Taylor has moved home from Arizona, and Sean is just up the road in San Luis Obispo. We’ve moved our tasting room back to the winery, bringing our guests and our wines together under one roof again. And then there’s Mamas.
We discovered her beneath one of our fermenters with six fluffy, thoroughly feral kittens. She was tiny, practically starving herself to feed her babies, and fiercely determined to protect them. We thought we were doing everyone a favor when we began trapping the kittens to take them to the shelter.
Mamas had other ideas. What followed was a true David and Goliath situation, with me playing the role of Goliath and losing rather spectacularly to a four-pound cat. I’ve been a little obsessed with her ever since. We named her Mamas because, well, she earned it. With her kittens now safely cared for, she has accepted a permanent position at Transcendence as our resident property cat, charged with keeping the mice in check and overseeing winery operations. She takes her responsibilities very seriously, and in return, we shower her with affection and an enormous amount of respect. And just like that, our little winery family has grown.
As we move through harvest, I’ve been thinking about what it means to be home. The kids are finding their footing, but we’re grateful to have them close and working side by side with us this harvest. The tasting room is back where our wines are made, and even Mamas, who fought so hard to protect her little family, has found a place where she can rest.
There is something deeply comforting about knowing where you belong and having people you can count on. Sharing this fall’s wines with you, I find myself especially grateful for the community that has grown around Transcendence. Some of you have been part of our lives for not just years, but decades. Others are just getting to know us, but you’ve all helped make this place feel like home.
We are looking forward to seeing you at the winery this fall. There’s wine to share, plenty of harvest stories, and if you’re lucky, you might see a very small cat with a great big maternal heart.
With love and gratitude,
Sara, Joey, Tina, Taylor, Sean, and Mamas
